EnergyTube Holding GmbH – GreenTec Award
2015-10-26 (Angela Budde)

Berlin, 29th May 2015 –  At the GreenTec Awards in Berlin, EnergyTube Holding GmbH was awarded the second prize (or rather, nomination) from among 250 entrants in the ‘Production’ category.

EnergyTube Holding GmbH – GreenTec Award

The EnergyBus Tube, developed in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, and patented worldwide, is a universally applicable rechargeable battery system suitable for use in everything from lawnmowers, pedelec and electric scooters, to household energy storage, to industrial applications. Any number of modules can be specified, according to the application and energy required. The innovative step is smart networking of the individual modules with magnetic connectors, enabling plug & play functionality in which each EnergyBus Tube protects itself, while also applying itself optimally within the interconnected network.

Several factors make this arrangement interesting for sustainability. The number of unused batteries left lying around per household can be reduced, because the same batteries can be applied in a wide variety of applications. Safety-critical battery storage systems, in which the batteries must often be changed every two years, could now be used until the end of their service life, as only any individual defective battery tubes would need to be replaced. These defective tubes can be disassembled into their component parts for optimum recycling. Also, there are today over 6000 different types of battery pack for pedelecs, and often after 5 years there is a problem with the availability of replacement batteries. The consequence is that still good vehicles can no longer be used. For all of these applications EnergyTube offers the solution to enable a sustainable battery system, which can eventually significantly reduce costs to consumers.

Currently, working with international partners, a worldwide standard for the EnergyBus Tube as an interchangeable battery for two-wheeled vehicles and Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) is being driven forwards by BKE in the national and international committees of the IEC and ISO, as well as in Germany.

Development work leading to series production will be undertaken in the next 2 to 3 years. The company EnergyTube Holding GmbH, founded in late 2014, is headquartered with its 10 staff on the University campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and it works on batteries, drive systems and infrastructure systems for lightweight electric vehicles. Director of R&D at EnergyTube Holding GmbH, Johannes Dörndorfer, has been working on battery-powered drive systems since 1990, and he has contributed to a wide range of electric vehicle developments. Close collaboration with Taiwanese partners enables him to directly link Asiatic battery know-how with German innovation in networking and Industry 4.0, offering a combination which is unique worldwide. A fully-automated production facility and training centre are to be built in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and this pilot factory will then be replicated worldwide in a franchise process.

The GreenTec Awards, Europe’s greatest environmental and business awards, were handed out for the eighth time in 2015, with around 1000 guests enjoying a glamorous gala in Berlin’s Tempodrome with exciting innovations, proud winners, eminent speakers and music acts. After the awards ceremony guests could enjoy culinary highlights and captivating talks in the foyer of the Tempodrome, where the exclusive GreenTec Awards exhibition was taking place.

This highlight of the environmental year attracted many VIPs into the capital. Among the guests walking over the traditional green carpet made from 100% recycled ECONYL® were the following: The BossHoss (musician), Nazan Eckes (host), Dr. Wladimir Klitschko (Heavyweight World Champion boxer and entrepreneur), Franziska Knuppe (model), David Mayer de Rothschild (environmental activist), Nena (singer), Christine Neubauer (actress), Désirée Nosbusch (actress, host) and many more. The opening address was from Peter Altmaier, Head of the Federal Chancellery and Minister for Special Projects. The gala was hosted by Annemarie Carpendale and Matthias Killing. For music acts there were Fahrenhaidt, Glasperlenspiel and LAING. The gala was played in by a flashmob from the Berlin Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Marco Voigt, initiator of the GreenTec Awards, said: "This was the largest and most demanding Awards that we have ever organised. We now find ourselves well on the way to becoming the most important environmental awards worldwide."
